Oscar night: Black Emanuelle

For this year's Oscar night tradition, Disco Monk is proud to present you with some wonderful tunes from Black Emanuelle: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Italian singer and in this case composer Nico Fidenco. Black Emanuelle was an Italian/Spanish softcore sexploitation film from director Bitto Albertini from 1975. The film was shot mostly in Kenya to justify the fact that the lead actress wasn't even black! The soundtrack was released on West End Records. It has an amazing funk, jazz and soul feel and I am sure it did very well at the discos. Enjoy

Feliz Disco De Mayo!

Feliz Cinco De Mayo! Here is a disco classic to elevate you this festive Saturday!  The Mexican by Bombers is a cover of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican".   Nothing can beat the beauty and rawness of the original but I must say the Bombers did quite amazing here elevating it to a even higher Disco strata.  Bombers was a disco outfit under the famous West End Records label that started shaking things up on the dance floors around 1978 with their dance and funk classics such as "Don't Stop The Music" and "Dance, Dance, Dance". My all time favorite is "Shake" from their follow up  Bombers II LP.  In celebration of the great nation of Mexico here are the original Mexican, the mix original and B-Boy anthem and of course Bomber's version for your enjoyment!....Disfrutalos!

Get Another Love

Happy Saturday! It is nonstop raining in the city today! Could nature be laying the ground work for Spring? Today I am feeling this remarkable song by Chantal Curtis. She was French but made incredible New York disco soundings records like this raw and classic "Get Another Love". A song with amazing driving beats that sets her incredible voice ablaze and the beautiful use of the harmonica during the song breaks. I have rarely heard harmonica used in disco song before and here it works fantastic. I found out that Chantal also recorded under the name Michelle for West End records and the music she made around that time was very "street". Chantal had a tragic ending when I found out she was murdered by her boyfriend during the mid 80's. She also recorded another smash disco song ironically called "Hitman" in '79 from the same album which is also considered another disco classic.
