This song is titled "It Comes in Waves" when dealing with emotions and different states of minds. Here is The Slave to the Rhythm remix, taking into consideration the vocals vocals featured have been used to death in countless mixes by countless Dj's yet I  couldn't resist the urgency of Grace Jones and company and had to surrender to be a Slave to the Rhythm! Always.

Malamente

I just discovered this powerful young lady from Spain Rosalia Vila from Baix Llobregat. At only 25 years young, this lady sounds ancient with such a powerful voice captivating the spirit of Spanish's Flamenco music with a touch of Bjork and Beyonce. Here is a remix from "Malamente" from her new upcoming 2018 release El Mal Querer. She is going be huge! So. lately, I've been devouring Grace Jones incredibly passionate "This Is Life" from her 2008 release Hurricane.   I have been remixing this powerful song as well but felt it needed a new twist  by adding "Malamente" with the help of Miss Vanjie. Enjoy it!

I have been reading Grace Jones' fabulous auto biography,  I'll Never Write My Memoirs which is so much fun  specially since it's written with so much warmth as if she would  be talking to you in her kitchen.  To celebrate her genius, here is "One Man Show" a film by Jean-Paul Goude which sums up her essence as a truly unique force to reckon with both musically and visually. By the way, Muse has been re-released as a box set along with Fame and Portfolio titled Grace Jones: The Disco Years.  It's full of extended mixes instrumentals and 12" disco versions. Pure candy for us disco heads! Now, Take that! And That!

We start the new year with an amazing vinyl only unreleased gem from Grace Jones' seminal LP Nightclubbing Compact Point All Stars sessions making this cover of Gary Numan's sync pop song a total sublime dance floor experience by combining disco and reggae brilliantly.  This 12" offering was part of last years' well received Record Store Day, the other side featured "Feel Up". Grace Jones: The Fashion Show and Don't Cry, It's Only The Rhythm

Two months ago I watched the legendary Grace Jones do an incredible rendition of "Slave To The Rhythm",  easily one her biggest hits ever, during the Queen's Jubilee concert while hula hooping at the young age of 64! As expected,  I was stunned by her but also haven't been able to forget the brilliance of this song.  I've been fortunate to see her perform live a couple of times and it has been an unforgettable experience.  As a creative force and ground breaking musician with her abundant contribution to dance music, Miss Grace Jones is a true icon and I could easily devote a whole blog about her music alone.   Instead, I will focus on the album itself since I've been wanting to do a posting dealing with the concept  based on the multi-track. Released in 1985, this masterpiece was solely based on different radical interpretations of this one song.  The entire project was written by Bruce Woolley, Simon Darlow, Stephen Lipson and the legendary Trevor Horn who produced it as well.  He introduced the idea of stripping the track to it's basic form and adding different elements such as voice overs, other instruments using some of the most interesting sound effects created out of a single melody and rhythm.  All the tracks on the album are intercepted with excerpts from a conversation about her life conducted by journalist Paul Morley, which gives the record an autobiographical feel.  Also some of the voice-overs are from actor Ian McShane reciting passages from Jean Paul Goude's biography Jungle Fever.  I'm finding hard to believe that "Slave" was originally intended for Frankie Goes To Hollywood as a follow up to their hit "Relax", but was finally given and rightly so to Miss  Jones.  There have been some other amazing concept albums but never like his one and it's worth revisiting in hopes that this will inspire a trend that seems dormant now.  The entire work is pure brilliance along with the amazing art work cover designed by Jean-Paul Goude, Jones' partner at that time. Put some Grace in your face. Happy Thanksgiving from Disco Monk

Happy Thanksgiving and what is turkey day without putting some Grace in your face.   Every year I always give thanks for my health, family, friends, nature and Ms. Grace Jones so when the end of year holidays are here, the amazing Grace and disco icon is always on heavy rotation on my turntables.  Why you might ask? Just listen to these couple of songs and perhaps you'll hear why.  So to start you on a festive note here is "Love On Top Of Love (Killer Kiss)". This song was the first single from her 1989 album Bulletproof Heart and it was produced by C&C Music Factory's David Cole and Robert Clivilles. The song reached number one on the billboard Dance Chart in December of that year.

Next, it's the sublime cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic "Breakdown" from her 1980's classic LP Warm Leatherette.  This song always seems poignant around this time of the year when we all reunite with family and love ones.
