Ken

Excited to hear Destroyer's new release Ken. Always loves me some Destroyer with Dan Bejar's writing and excellent sense of timing, melody and a healthy sense of musical eras to mine. In this one he mentioned being inspired by late and post Tatcher England heavy on the goth sound recalling, The Church and The Cure, Oasis.  A must listen I have to say.  I was so inspired that  ended up remixing some bits and pieces form my favorite parts of from the release. It's a little rough with some glitches here and there but I'm pleased with it...Enjoy!

Best Record of 2011: Kapput

I'm ending the year full circle with hands down the best record of the year and it is indisputably Destroyer's Kapput.  Early this past January, I did a posting titled Going Kapput nominating this fresh new release from revered Canadian musician/song writer Dan Behar, the best of 2011 and so far nothing else has matched the heart felt brilliance and sonic beauty of this album .  Kapput is already a classic in my book and will be for years to come.  I will never get tired of listening to this unique mature, complex, poetic, jazzy, 80's synthesizer and trumpet oddity.  With the aid of gorgeous vocals from Sibel Thrasher, all of the nine songs self evolve and become magical making the listener addicted to the melodies and intricate story telling.  Kapput is an exceptional record so here is the title song to prove it along with the sublime "Suicide Demo for Kara Walker".  To all my dear readers and listeners, I wish you a Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.  Thank you for tuning in for another year of Disco Monk and see you in 2012! March Mix

"Beware of the idles of March"...It's hard not to escape that thought as I write this post with all the insanity that has happened this month.  Starting on a positive side with the peaceful culmination of the Egyptian uprising then the earthquake, tsunami  and nuclear tragedy in Japan and now another war in the Middle East in  Libya.   All having major global implications impacting humanity on so many deeper levels.  With all of that said as the world mourns,  I  was inclined to make a mix that reflects hope, love, freedom and redemption amidst tragedy and death.    The March Mix features a healthy dose of Jazz, soul, gospel,  disco, house and a nice emphasis on some great Japanese acts that I felt right for this mix.
The emphasis here is of hope, freedom, rebirth and a bit of escape during this hard times.  Enjoy!

Going Kaputt

Snow day in the city today and so far this is the best new release of 2011! This masterpiece is  the perfect antidote for those cold winter days and it's delivered by Canadian singer/poet/songwriter Dan Bejar.  Bejar has been on the scene since 1995 releasing interesting music meshing blues, folk and glam which has led him to be sporadically compared to David Bowie by sharing the same great songwriting and unique incorporation of  lyrics/vocals.   Kaputt is his ninth LP under the Destroyer moniker fusing spacey electronics to acid jazz inspired by the music of Bryan Ferry and Gil Evans.  There are so many great songs in this release that it was difficult to choose one and settled with the emblematic and gorgeous "Song For America".  Joined by Vancouver native Sibel Thrasher on vocals, whose vocals are used beautifully and consistently on this entire record.  "Song For America" is clearly his take on retro funk with amazing lines  like "winter, spring, summer, and fall, animals crawl towards death's embrace"and easily could be the catchiest song to date.  All nine tracks are stunning including the remarkable  "Suicide Demo for Kara Walker", "Downtown" and "Bay Of Pigs" to name a few.   It is evident the new revisionist movement of  80's soft rock, synth and jazz is gaining momentum and it will make an even bigger splash this year with bands such as Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti  fronting this new pop movement.  Personally, upon first listening, I thought of the late Malcolm McLaren during his Paris period and of course Neal Tenant from Pet Shop Boys.  This record left me speechless and I highly recommend it!
